Peter Matson

Peter Matson is a Brooklyn-based musician, producer, and DJ with deep roots in New York’s live and electronic music scenes. He is the founder and bandleader of Underground System, the post-punk Afro collective known for its high-energy shows and genre-blurring sound. With the group, he has toured internationally and released music on Soul Clap, Hell Yeah, Planet E, Razor-N-Tape, and Heavenly Sweetness. As a solo artist, Peter’s dance releases and remixes appear on labels such as Bastard Jazz, Razor-N-Tape, and Heist Recordings. His performance history spans iconic venues and festivals around the world, from The Apollo Theater and Central Park SummerStage to Public Records, Nightmoves, Eurockéennes de Belfort, Fusion Festival in Germany, and Laurent Garnier’s Festival Yeah in France.

At Sound Collective, Peter brings years of experience as both an educator and working artist, shaped by studies at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and a long track record of teaching across New York City. He has led master classes internationally, taught production and ensemble work at Building Beats, and served as a music and songwriting instructor in CUNY’s Brooklyn College Art Lab. His approach combines modern digital production tools with a strong musical foundation, helping students build confidence, develop taste, and translate ideas into fully realized tracks. Peter has been teaching at Sound Collective since 2022.
