Funk and Disco Rhythm Guitar

Funk and disco rhythm guitar is about much more than playing chords in time. It is about developing the control, stamina, timing, and musical awareness needed to become the guitarist who makes an entire groove feel better. In this course, intermediate guitarists explore the techniques behind some of the most influential funk, disco, Afrobeat, jazz-funk, post-disco, and dance music guitar parts while learning how to apply those ideas to their own playing.

The course begins with the fundamentals of rhythm guitar, including right-hand warmups, 16th-note subdivisions, muted strumming, ghost notes, chord attacks, and single-note lines. From there, you will study landmark recordings by James Brown and his guitarists, learning how the famous funk “chank” developed and how tightly interlocking guitar parts can create a powerful rhythmic foundation. You will also explore the clave-based guitar language of Fela Kuti and Tony Allen, including Dorian chord voicings, natural-6th extensions, tenor guitar lines, and the stamina required for extended grooves.

As the course progresses, you will move into jazz-funk and disco through the work of Herbie Hancock, Wah Wah Watson, Nile Rodgers, and Chic. You will examine how continuous 16th-note strumming, ghost notes, syncopated chord stabs, muted single-note riffs, octave bends, and precise note lengths create distinctive rhythmic feels. Later lessons connect these classic techniques to David Bowie, Prince and The Time, Talking Heads, French Touch house music, contemporary dance-rock, and modern electronic production.

The goal is not simply to copy famous guitar parts. You will develop a deeper understanding of why these parts work, how they interact with bass, drums, keyboards, horns, vocals, and electronic elements, and how you can adapt the concepts to your own music. Throughout the course, the emphasis remains on pocket, consistency, physical control, and musical restraint. By the end, you will have a broader rhythm guitar vocabulary and a stronger foundation for playing funk, disco, Afrobeat, dance music, and groove-oriented original music.

Meet Your Instructor

Peter Matson is a Brooklyn-based musician, producer, DJ, and educator with deep roots in New York’s live and electronic music scenes. He is the founder and bandleader of Underground System, a post-punk Afro collective known for high-energy performances and a genre-blurring approach to music. His work with the group has included international touring and releases on labels including Soul Clap, Hell Yeah, Planet E, Razor-N-Tape, and Heavenly Sweetness.

As a solo artist, Peter has released dance music and remixes through labels including Bastard Jazz, Razor-N-Tape, and Heist Recordings. His performance experience includes major venues and festivals, while his teaching background spans New York City programs, international master classes, ensemble work, production education, and songwriting instruction. He studied at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and has taught at institutions and programs including Building Beats and CUNY’s Brooklyn College Art Lab.
