Vinyl Basics is a free, beginner-friendly workshop designed for anyone who's ever wanted to try DJing on vinyl but didn't know where to start. Hosted in Sound Collective's New York City lounge, this two-hour, hands-on session introduces the core fundamentals of DJing using turntables and records, the format that started it all. You'll learn how vinyl DJs structure mixes, control tempo, and transition between tracks, then step behind the decks to try it yourself in a supportive, no-pressure environment. Whether you're curious about the format or exploring a different side of DJing, the Vinyl Basics workshop gives you a real first experience.

How This Workshop Works

  • 100% free, beginner-level vinyl DJ workshop, no experience or prerequisites required
  • 2-hour in-person session at Sound Collective NYC, hosted in the lounge
  • Learn essential vinyl DJ fundamentals: turntable setup, cueing, tempo control, and basic transitions
  • Hands-on instruction from professional DJs using industry-standard turntables and equipment
  • Guided learning followed by open practice time to experiment and ask questions

Our Facility

Sound Collective features a full suite of professional spaces, including a dedicated recording studio, modern production labs, a PA-equipped performance space, and a fully outfitted DJ studio. Every room is stocked with industry-standard gear, modern hardware & software, and flexible setups for classes, practice, and collaboration.

Throughout your studies, use these spaces as your daily workspace, producing in the labs, recording in the tracking rooms, mixing on the SSL console, and rehearsing sets in the DJ studio.
